Breast Reduction

Introduction

Breast Reduction

Despite the saying that “bigger is better”, this is not always true. For many women with a larger breast size, not only can they experience social and emotional turmoil, but also physiological challenges such as rashes, skin tears, and orthopedic pain due to the extra upper chest weight. If you have heavy breasts, a breast reduction in New York City from double-board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Peter Henderson can help you lose some of this chest weight. Conveniently nestled in Union Square, Henderson Breast Reconstruction has been helping women live better and more comfortable lives, and it all starts with just one consultation. We invite you to learn more about this procedure and what it can do for you.

What is a Breast Reduction?

Breast reduction, also known as a reduction mammaplasty, is a surgical procedure that reduces the size and volume of a woman’s breasts. By removing the excess breast tissue, fat, and skin, double-board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Henderson, helps his patients achieve breasts that are proportional to their overall physical anatomy. During this resizing, the nipple and areola might also be moved to better sit symmetrically with the new smaller breast.

Breast reductions have been known to help women achieve more active lifestyles and reduce their physical and emotional burden of larger breasts in societies where breast size can be coupled with beauty standards, self-esteem, and sometimes unwanted attention.

“ I Couldn’t be Happier!”

It has been about six weeks since my breast reduction and I couldn’t be happier. My results are just what I hoped for, and the healing process has been much easier than I expected. From booking my initial consultation to my final post-op, the entire process was made smooth and straight-forward by Dr. Henderson, Aljenica, Xiomara and the rest of the team. I always felt heard and cared for, and I felt very comfortable expressing my discomfort with my breasts and how I wanted them to look and feel. Dr. Henderson’s approach is very calm and straight-forward, and the team is very responsive and easy to talk to, which meant that there was never a time that I felt nervous or frustrated while working with them. The insurance process was also very smooth thanks to the person at their office responsible for billing. And of course, the surgery itself went very well and the post-op appointments were informative and easy. Dr. Henderson and team provided me with very clear-cut instructions for post-op recovery, which was great, because I felt confident following their instructions rather than the overload of information available online. Overall a 10+/10 experience, would have surgery done by Dr. Henderson again but hope I never have to!

How do I prepare for my Breast Reduction?

You will receive a complete list of what you should and shouldn’t do prior to your surgery, but here are some tips on preparing for your breast reduction surgery in New York City.

  • Getting lab work prescribed
  • Getting imaging as prescribed
  • Adjusting current medications as prescribed
  • Stop smoking or vaping*
  • Avoid taking aspirin and certain anti-inflammatory drugs, as they can increase bleeding
  • Resting and staying hydrated
  • Arranging for someone to drive you to and from surgery

What to Expect on the Day of Breast Reduction Surgery

On the day of your breast reduction, you will meet with Dr. Henderson at our surgical center and review the steps of your procedure. Once you are prepared and ready for surgery, our anesthesiologist will administer your anesthesia so you will be comfortably asleep throughout the procedure.

Dr. Henderson will begin by making an incision on your breasts. Depending on what was discussed during your consultation, and the plan marked out after your assessment, he will design an incision that goes around the areola, extending vertically from the nipple along the lower portion of the breast, with another along the inframammary crease (often referred to as an anchor incision). This incision pattern achieves the greatest reduction and lift.

Next, Dr. Henderson will remove the excess tissue and reposition the nipple and areola, which will remain connected to its original blood and nerve supply. If necessary, the areola diameter can be reduced by removing skin around the perimeter. Any underlying breast tissue will be reduced and the remaining breast tissue will be lifted and shaped.

Finally, Dr. Henderson will close the incisions, which are sutured at the deeper layers of the breast tissue to reshape and support the now smaller breast. Absorbable sutures are then used to close the incisions and dressings are applied.

The length of this procedure will vary depending on the type of technique and complexity of your individual case but will typically take a few hours to complete.

Breast Reduction Recovery

After the surgery is finished, you will be taken to a recovery area, where you will be closely monitored as you wake up from anesthesia. Dr. Henderson will advise you on the types of pain medication you should take throughout your recovery process and you will be provided with detailed information on what you can do to ensure healing is on track. Since breast reduction is an outpatient procedure, you will be able to leave that same day, but you will need someone to take you home.

During the first week post-surgery, you should expect to feel sore, but not painful. The next two to three weeks of recovery will have you feeling much better and you can return to work.

About a month post-surgery, you will need to continue to wear your support bra and continue being gentle with your breasts, but you will be able to slowly increase your activity. You will need to continue your regularly scheduled routine mammograms in the future. At this point, you will be able to discuss any scar optimization protocols to reduce their appearance.
